Sri Mahakaleshwar Temple History
The city of Ujjain was ruled by Muslims from 1160 to 1728. During this regime, they almost destroyed the ancient traditions of Hindus. After this, in 1690, the Marathas attacked the region of Malwa and then captured Malwa in 1728. and regained the lost glory of Ujjain.
It remained the capital of Malwa from 1728 to 1731. Two major events took place at this place during the rule of the Marathas. One is that the prestige of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga was restored and the other is that Simhastha Kumbh Mela was established at this place. Later this temple is said to have been expanded by Raja Bhoja. In the year 1736, the rich Peshwa Bajirao and Shahu Maharaj’s army chief Ranaji Rao Shinde started building this temple. After that, his son, Mahadji Shinde, modified and restored it from time to time.

Meaning of the name Mahakal

Temple premises – The premises of this temple are very grand. There is also a big tank called Kotitirtha on the temple premises at this place. The water in this shrine and this shrine are considered very holy. To the east of this kunda is a large-sized veranda with an entrance to the pass. A room to the north of the veranda houses the idols of Sri Ram and Goddess Avantika. There are many smaller temples to the south of the main temple. Features of the Temple
- Lord Mahakal is bathed with cold water in the morning in this temple. After that, Abhishekam is done with Panchamrita. Pimpal leaves, Shani, Palash, and Manuka leaves are burnt to prepare Bhasma.
- Aarti is performed here with this bhasma. The sanctum sanctorum of this temple has idols of Mother Parvati, Kartikeya, and Ganesha Ji. Lord Krishna, his elder brother Balarama and his friend Sudama studied in the ashram at Ujjain. Among the famous twelve Jyotirlingas in India, this Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain is the only Jyotirlinga that faces south.
- Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is divided into three parts. Mahakaleshwar in the lower parts Omkareshwar in the middle and Sri Nagachandreshwar temple in the upper parts.
- This Sri Nagchandreshwar Shivling is seen only on the day of Nagapanchami. The palanquin of Mahakaleshwar starts every year in the month of Shravan from the banks of Kshipra river and returns to the temple after visiting Ujjain.
- According to religious belief, no king has stayed overnight at this place since the reign of King Vikramaditya. It is said that whoever dared to do this was surrounded and killed.

Rules
This temple is open for darshan from dawn till night. Darshan must be done during this time only. While entering the temple, slippers, shoes as well as purses, and leather items are not allowed inside. Shoes must be kept outside the temple where there is a shoe rack. During Abhishek Puja, it is compulsory for men to wear dhoti or sovale and women to wear saree. It is necessary to maintain peace in this temple as well as to ensure that no one is disrespected.
