Rameshwaram Temple History

Inscriptions in the Rameshwaram temple state that the sanctum sanctorum of the original linga was built by King Parakrama Bahu of Sri Lanka in AD 1173. A single Shivalinga was established in that temple.

The idol of the goddess has not been kept, hence it is called “Nisangeshwar’s Temple”. Later in the 15th century, King Udayan Setupathi and the Vaishyas of nearby Nagur built its 78-foot-tall gopura. Later a Devi devotee from Madurai restored it. The fortification wall on the south side was built by Tirumalaya Sethupathi in the 16th century. A statue of him and his son is installed at the gate.

In the same century, King Vishwanath of Madurai and Udayan Sethupattu built the Nandi Mandap. This pavilion is about 22 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 17 feet high. In the 18th century, Ravi Vijaya Sethupathi built a dormitory and pavilion for the deities.

Later Big Ramalinga Sethupati built the outer wall. Between 1897 and 1904, a family from Madhya Devkotai built a 126-foot-tall gopuram with nine gates. This family repaired the sanctum sanctorum between 1907 and 1925. Later in 1947, his Mahakumbha Abhishek was also performed.

Gods In Rameshwaram Mandir

Two Shivlingas are worshiped in this temple. The first Shivlinga was established in the center of the temple by Mother Sita and Lord Ramachandra. Which is called Ramalingam. Apart from this, Lord Hanuman’s Shivlinga brought from Mount Kailash in the temple premises is also known as Kashilingam Vishwalingam or Hanuman Lingam. • There is no charge for offering flowers and garlands at this Jyotirlinga.
• Even the Shivlinga of this place cannot be touched.
• One should not enter the temple with wet clothes after bathing in the shrines within the temple premises.
• It is considered best to bathe in the Agni Tirtha before entering the temple for the Darshan of this Shiv Linga.
• Devotees who do not want to take a bath should at least sprinkle the water of Agni Tirtha all over their bodies.
• The arrangement of lockers in the temple premises is free through the temple. In which you can keep your bags, purses, etc.
