OMKARESHWAR JYOTIRLINGA MANDIR INFORMATION

This Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, the fourth of the twelve Jyotirlinga of Lord Shankara in India, is situated on an island called Mandhata or Shivpuri on the banks of the Narmada river in the district called Khandwa in the state of Madhya Pradesh in the vicinity of the Vindhyachal Mountains.

It is a Hindu temple and is located 77 km from Indore and about 13 km from Moratakka village. At this place, the Narmada River splits into two parts and forms an island called Mandhata or Shivpuri. The island is about 4 km long and 2 km wide. The shape of this island is made in the shape of “Om” which is a sacred symbol of Hindus.

According to the Puranas, Vindhya Parbat worshiped Lord Shankara in the form of Parthiva Linga and performed penance. This caused Lord Shankar to appear and bless him. He then incarnated as Linga. Later it was divided and one part got the name “Omkareshwar” and the other part was “Mamaleshwar”. It is said that the Jyotirlinga is at Omkareshwar and the Parthivalinga is at Mamleshwar.

During the medieval period Mandhata, Omkar Nagar was ruled by rulers like Parmar of Dhar, Sultan of Malwa, Scindia. It is said that Omkareshwar Island was inhabited by tribals earlier. This place belonged to Kalika Devi. Devotees of the goddess are known as Bhairavagana. They used to trouble pilgrims a lot. Pilgrims were also sacrificed. Later on, a Siddha Purusha named Daryainath established his ashram at this place, reduced the trouble of the Bhairav ​​Ganas, and banned them. Since then pilgrims started coming to this place again.

Later Bhils also ruled here for some time. In the year 1195, Raja Bharat Singh Chauhan added to the glory of Omkar Mandhata by conquering the kingdom of Bhil. The royal palace of this Bharat Singh Chauhan king is standing there in a dilapidated condition and his descendants are still asserting their rights by establishing themselves as kings on this island.

Second Bajirao Peshwa also restored the old temple.After the Peshwa, Punyashlok Ahilya Devi Holkar also made many improvements to this ancient pilgrimage site. A very beautiful and big ghat was built and especially started the method of Kati Lingarchana. After this, in 1894, this temple was finally taken over by the British.

OMKARESHWAR MEANING:-

This temple of Lord Shankara is situated on the island of Vishal Mandhata or Shivpuri or Omkar on the bank of river Narmada. The shape of the island and the river at this place is “Om” shaped. This place is named Omkar + Ishwar “Omkareshwar” which is stable in this place.

Significance of Omkareshwar Temple:-

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is considered to be one of the most sacred and powerful Jyotirlingas of Lord Shankara. Jyoti means light and Linga means the symbolic form of Lord Shankara i.e. Jyotirlinga. It is also said that by worshiping these Jyotirlingas, all sins are taken away and Lord Shankar blesses us. Half of this Jyotirlinga is in Omkareshwar temple and half in Mamaleshwar temple.

Temple Rules:-

  • Devotees who have booked online for any service have to deposit the printed copy of the ticket along with a photo ID at the temple counter and give the same idea to them.
  • If you have booked any service in the temple then a maximum of two people can participate in that service.
  • There is no specific dress code as the devotees visiting this temple should dress appropriately.
  • Due to the disaster of Corona, there is no permission for darshan and worship in the sanctum sanctorum at this place.
  • According to the opening and closing times of the temple and the darshan time, you should take advantage of the place. The darshan time of this temple is from 5.00 am to 8.00 pm and the ticket booked by devotees is for that whole day.
  • So you can use that ticket for darshan any time during that whole day.
  • Children under the age of twelve are not allowed to enter the temple alone.

Just as the Bhasma Aarti of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh is famous, the Shayan Aarti of Omkareshwar Temple is also famous. But in Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, Lord Shankar’s aarti is performed in the morning, at midnight, and three in the evening. It is believed that Lord Shankar comes here every day to sleep. It is also believed that Lord Shankar plays Chaucer with Mother Parvati in this temple. Therefore, Chaucers are seen spread out in this place at night. Surprisingly, Chaucer and his dice are found scattered in the temple in the morning as if someone had played them.
