Mallikarjun Temple History –

According to legend, the history of Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga can be seen from inscriptions of the Satavahana dynasty. Many great kings and emperors contributed to the construction of this Jyotirlinga. It is said that the kings of Pallava, Chalukya, Kakatiya, Reddy, etc. did the development work of this temple.

The main pavilion and south gopuram of the temple were built by King Harihara of the Vijayanagara Empire. The kings of Vijayanagara had built a gopura at this place. Its crest was of gold. A lake and a temple were also built at this place. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had darshan of this Jyotirlinga in the year 1667 during his invasion of Karnataka.
