Why is it called Dudhsagar?

The trek from Castlerock Railway Station to Dudhsagar Falls gives you an experience of what thrills are all about. We experienced this thrill recently.

The original identity of Goa is just the smooth-calm beaches and charming old-time churches. However, an even more unique and thrilling opportunity to experience Goa is the railway line from the British-era Castlerock Railway Station to the Dudhsagar Falls at the Lord Mahavir Sanctuary. For this one has to trek through ten to eleven tunnels.

Dudhsagar Falls is the fifth-highest waterfall in India and falls from a height of about 1030 feet. Drizzling rain, occasional thick fog, the scenery of South Goa seen from a deep valley, passenger trains, and goods trains coming during the trek make the trek a double pleasure. South India is rich in natural beauty. You have seen glimpses of this in many movies. In a scene from the recent movie ‘Chennai Express’, we have seen Dudhsagar waterfall. The experience of trekking along the railway tracks cannot be expressed in words.

For this trek, we had to reach Castlerock from Kolhapur. This distance is about 200 km. The distance from Castlerock to Dudhsagar is about 14 kilometers. This route is completely over the railway track, through the tunnel on this route, and over an iron bridge built over a deep valley to Dudhsagar. It is difficult to describe the experience of dense forest around, a deep valley on one side, train running slowly through the fog.

Some tunnels are connected to each other by iron bridges. Other small and big waterfalls can be seen falling down from the side of the mountain to Dudhsagar. You can even experience some of these waterfalls. As there are no hotels or food facilities in Dudhsagar, it is necessary to take food with you while going here. If you take a small gas grill with you, you can have a unique experience of ready-to-cook noodles, tea, and coffee in a tunnel on the way to the trek. The taste of hot coffee after being drenched in the rain is something else.

At Ramnagar in Belagaon, it has been raining heavily since the day, due to which the flow of Dhabdba has increased. The famous Dudhsagar waterfall in the dense forest on the Karnataka-Goa border has also started collapsing. However, this year, due to the Corona crisis, tourists will have to be deprived of the beauty of this waterfall.

Every year, as soon as the rains start, tourists from the country and abroad remember the Dudhsagar waterfall. Every year this waterfall flows at its full capacity only after July. But, in the first rain this year, Dudhsagar started collapsing. Its red color is now visible. This waterfall falling from a high peak is not yet falling at full capacity, but its appearance is worth seeing. The white water of the waterfall is now pleasing the tourists. But, this year, due to Corona, the desire to see the waterfall has to be kept in mind.

Earlier, tourists used to come in large numbers from all over the country to see the Dudhsagar Dhabdhaba. However, there were incidents of drowning in the waterfall, rioting by tourists, falling down and getting injured while boarding the train, and breaking the glass of the air-conditioned coach as the train did not stop for a long time. Therefore, the administration banned tourists from coming to the place of the waterfall. But after this ban was removed last year, Belgaum-Vasco local railway was started.

Hence, the tourist traffic increased. But, this year due to the Corona crisis, there is a displeasure among the tourists as they will have to miss the beauty of the waterfall due to restrictions on going to the tourist spot.
