According to Hindu mythology, the city of Dwarka was built on a piece of land that Krishna retrieved from the sea. Sage Durvasa once went to meet Krishna and his wife Rukmini. The sage wanted both Krishna and Rukmani to take him to their palace. The couple immediately agreed and accompanied the sage to his palace. After going some distance, Rukmini got tired and asked Krishna for water. Krishna dug a legendary pit which was brought into the river Ganga. This enraged sage Durvasa and cursed Rukmini to stay in the same place. Today it is believed that the temple is at the same place where Rukmanji stood.

The magnificent Dwarkadhish mandir, popularly known as the “Jagat Temple of Dwarka”, is a five-storied temple built in the Chalukya style. This magnificent temple is made of limestone and sand. The five-story building of this temple is supported by 72 pillars and 78.3 meters high with intricate carvings. It has an exquisitely carved spire 42 meters high and a cloth flag 52 yards high.
