Sri Rameshwaram Temple Story:-
According to legend, when Lord Sri Rama was returning from the conquest of Lanka with Mother Sita, he crossed the sea and first rested at Gandhamadana mountain. At that time, great sages arrived at Gandhamadana mountain to see him. The sages blessed Sri Rama and said that by killing Ravana, he had committed the sin of killing Brahma. Sri Rama then asked the sages to solve this problem so that he could be freed from this sin. Then all the sages told Lord Rama that you should worship Shivalinga here. Lord Shankar will be pleased. In this way, you can be freed from the sins of this Brahman.
Then Lord Rama ordered Hanumanji to fetch Linga from Mount Kailash. Hanumanji rushed through the sky towards Mount Kailas with great speed and when he reached Mount Kailas Lord Shankar was engrossed in penance. Hanuman Ji was also waiting for Lord Shankar to open his eyes. On the other hand, the auspicious time for worshiping the Shivalinga in Rameswaram was approaching. Then Mother Sita got worried. Fearing that the auspicious time of worship would pass, Mother Sita made a clay Shivlinga and Lord Sri Rama installed this Shivlinga made by Mother Sita on the auspicious time and worshiped it. Thus he was freed from the sin of Brahma’s installment
Hanumanji came after the worship of Shivlinga. Then he saw that the Shivlinga had been established. He was very sad to see this. Seeing them sad, Lord Shri Rama said that the Shivalinga had to be installed and worshiped so that the auspicious time would not pass. But still, Hanumanji felt bad.
Then Shri Rama asked to restore the Shiv Linga brought by Hanuman. Thus the Shiv Linga established by Lord Rama was named Rama Linga and the Linga established by Hanuman was named Hanuman Linga. Later this temple was named Sri Rameswaram after the name of Lord Rama.
