Mohammad Ghazni who came from Afghanistan captured this temple and this city after almost two days of war. In which it was said that 70,000 people died. This temple of wonderful wealth was destroyed by Mohammad Ghazni. Then in 1297 and 1394 and again in 1706, Aurangzeb destroyed the temple. After that, the temple was not rebuilt till 1950.

According to historians, the Somnath temple was destroyed 17 times and rebuilt each time. After India’s independence, Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel started the reconstruction of the present building and it was dedicated to the nation on December 1, 1955, by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Somnath Temple

The Somnath Temple is the first of the twelve jyotirlingas located on the seashore at Veraval, Gujarat state. We can see the existence of this temple for two thousand years. The temple was destroyed seventeen times by foreign invaders. Each time they were rebuilt. About 155 feet tall and the kalasha at the top of the temple weighs about ten tons and the flag is 27 feet high and one foot in circumference. The entrance of this temple is built in an artistic manner. This temple is built in three parts namely assembly mandap, sanctum sanctorum, and natyamandap.

The present structure of this temple was completed in five years from 1951 to 1955. In the core of the temple is the Shivlinga of Lord Shankar and the core of this temple is completely made of gold. Lord Shankar is regularly worshiped at this place.

Temple Features

Somnath linga has been established under the ground at this place. Therefore, a lack of light is felt in that place. In this temple, Lakshmi, Parwati, and Ganga are installed. There is also an idol of Ahilyeshwar in the upper part of the ground. There is a temple of Ganesha in the premises of the temple and an idol of Aghorlinga is installed outside the northern door. There is also a temple of Mahakali near Ahilyabai temple. Also, there are temples of Bhadrakali, Lord Vishnu, and Ganeshji. There is a lake called Gaurikund near the temple premises. There is an ancient Shivalinga near this lake.

By seeing, worshiping, and remembering the Jyotirlinga here, all the sins of the devotees of Lord Shankara are removed. Likewise, the troubles are also removed. By worshiping Lord Somnath, Lord Shankar is believed to bless him, and one gets all the happiness in life.

Temple Aarti Darshan Time and Entry Fee

Somnath temple opens for darshan to devotees at 7 am and closes at 10 pm.
In this temple, the aarti of Mahadev is performed three times a day i.e. at 7 am, 7 pm, and 12 pm.
In this temple, you get to witness an excellent experience of a light show between eight to nine at night.

  • Morning Aarti – 07.00 am to 07.30 am
  • Afternoon Aarti – 12.00 to 12.30
  • Evening Aarti – 07.00 to 07.30

Facts about the temple

One of the major twelve jyotirlingas of India, the Somnath temple is considered a fine example of architecture. It is also known as Anant Tirtha.

Lord Krishna is also believed to have gone to his heavenly abode from this place after finishing his work. Seventeen times foreign invaders invaded and destroyed this temple. Yet every time the Hindu kings rebuilt this temple

Mention of this temple is also found in Shrimad Bhagwat, Shivapurana, Rigveda, and Skanda Purana. The rivers Kapila, Hiranya, and Saraswati confluence in the sea. This is called Triveni Sangam. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel proposed the Somnath Temple to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, at that time Nehru opposed the proposal, as Munshi has written in his book Freedom’s Tirtha.

Temple rules

This temple is open for darshan from 6 am to 9 pm. It is during this period that we need to take darshan. Sandals, shoes, and leather goods are not allowed inside the temple premises. These things have to be kept outside the temple.

Mobile phones and cameras are also not allowed inside this temple. Devotees must take care to maintain peace in the temple and avoid disrespect.
